During the last week in Aug 1996, I drove (~5000 miles round trip) with my good friend Don Schumann to California. We went there to pick up a Wheeler Express full-scale, kit airplane. Below are some pictures that we took on the trip.

The big trees are Sequoia's in Grant's Grove. Notice that some are quite burnt in the middle. Their bark (as thick as 2 feet on some trees) is flame retardent. That is why they are ~3000 years old and the rest of the forest has burnt down many times. Also, I suspect that their lower limbs burnt off due to the heat and flames from the other trees (redwoods etc) in the forest.

This big hole is Meteor Crater out in Arizona. A rather large hole created by a rather small meteor moving at a rather high rate of speed. This seems to be privately owned and operated now. The Apollo astronauts did some training in the hole to get a feel for craters...
